Black Box White Cube
During late 2020 to 2021, I progressed an audio recording and production project – Black Box White Cube – to online distribution. Growing up with a father running a semi-professional recording studio in an octagon shaped sandstone and mudbrick building (the construction of which kept me off the streets as an adolescent), the project allowed me to refresh some deep-seated knowledge of acoustics, audio engineering and mastering in my creative AV media practice. In my guise as a recording musician, releasing four singles (Hold Down, April 2021, featured for the present event) has been a cathartic peek at audio production and sound design. However, the project enabled practical engagement with emergent motion graphic platforms within music streaming services and music promotion. Subsequently, I have written the likes of video loop-based Spotify song canvases, Apple Music album animation, and social media promotion options into recent student project briefs. I struggle with the fairness of streaming distribution for independent artists and labels but there are exciting motion-driven variants of cover art emerging.
