Foto Friendship: The first 7 years 2014-2020
Founded in 2014 by Wendy Chandler and Tammy Burnstock, Foto Friendship is an ongoing community photovoice project linking high school students in Greater Western Sydney and Timor-Leste. Each year a different group of high school students in Australia and Timor-Leste are invited to participate. Each young person creates and selects his or her own series of photographs which is complimented with a paragraph of related text. The work utilises photo-storytelling as a form of collaborative visual ethnography exploring questions of personal and cultural identity. Photovoice is a participatory research method that combines photography with grass roots social action. This work promotes critical thinking and knowledge about personal and community issues in Greater Western Sydney and Timor-Leste unique to each participating group and individual’s demographic and experiences. Each year the additional work is added to a central website featuring curated online galleries building a continuous body of new work. Foto Friendship 2020 culminated in an ABC documentary “Through Our Eyes” broadcast in 2021.
