Something More – The Work of Tracey Moffatt Igniting Conversations in Public Art Galleries
Merleau-Ponty (1960/1964), says ‘each one of us (is) pregnant with the others and confirmed by them in his body.’ (p.181). How does this reciprocity manifest in the commonplace pedagogic practices of talking about artworks in art galleries with rotating groups of strangers.
How do we as professional gallery pedagogues ‘care for’ (Nel Nodding, 2015), the proximate strangers that make up our audiences when we invite them into conversations (Burnham and Kai-Kee, 2011, Tannen, 2005) about contemporary art? How can the practice of critical performative pedagogy with its commitment to embodied learning as a social justice practice inform the way we engage with intercultural (Burnard et all, 2016) photographic artworks that performs activism?
This presentation will feature selected works from Tracey Moffat’s seminal photographic series, Something More, 1989.
