Associate Professor Tanya Notley

Media literacy has never been more important for citizens to survive and thrive. The Australian Media Literacy Alliance brings together key public institutions and networked organisations to tackle the challenges of media literacy education as a national priority. The members are: ABC Education (ABC), Australian Centre for the, Moving Image (ACMI), Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), First Nations Media (FNM), Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD), National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA), Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) and Western Sydney Uni- versity (WSU). AMLA members work together to advocate for a national approach and policy, design and implement research, develop learning opportunities and support the capacity of stakeholders.

My research and teaching is focused on communication, technology and social change. I collaborate with media literacy, human rights and social justice organisations and public cultural institutions to design communication initiatives for social impact and I have worked on practice-based communication research projects in the UK, Germany, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Singapore and Australia. I am the Deputy Chair of the Australian Media Literacy Alliance (AMLA). I lead a media literacy reserach program and co-lead the Platform for Civic Media Literacy at the Institute for Culture and Society. I also lead a project focused on investigating and advancing adult media literacy and I am a Chief Investigator on a project designed to support the digital inclusion of families living in low income households (led by Michael Dezuanni at QUT). In 2018-2020 I led a project focused on young Australians, news and democracy.
