Blue Mountains Music: Time For A Re-Think

“With our ancient mountains already appearing more black than blue and more water-eroded, our tourism-based economy was severely damaged. Additionally, due to fear of COVID-19 infection, which is spread through the air and touch, we can’t organise and attend physical gigs, festivals, workshops, or meetings. This has been extremely hard for the creative sector of the Blue Mountains…We must rediscover a sense of connective solidarity as an artistic community.”

Professor Alexis Wright’s magnificent new novel, Professor Alexis Wright’s magnificent new novel, Praiseworthy, was published in April 2023 by Giramondo Publishing. We are honoured at WSU to have the opportunity to work with Alexis. Praiseworthy is a major addition to world literature - the book is set in the Northern Territory and asks big questions of Australia. Alexis is a featured guest at this week’s Sydney Writers’ Festival. This Saturday (May 27th 2pm) Casula Powerhouse Art This Saturday (May 27th 2pm) Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre in partnership with the School of Humanities and Communication Arts presents "Migrants' Flight Towards Dreams In The Horizon: A Conversation and Storytelling Session. It's free AND there will be yummy food! Arriving at the airport, migrants bring with them dreams of a better life in a foreign land. Whether they are economic migrants, international students, queer migrants, families seeking reunification, or expatriates, they carry with them hopes that the flight they have just taken will lead them to a thriving life. This will be a relaxed, performance-based storytelling session led by speakers @ArpitaDas @BethYahp @SujithKumarPrankumar @SukhmaniKhorana @QuahEeLing These speakers will share their stories on why they have taken a flight or several flights to pursue their dreams, what post-migration life has been for them and whether their dreams have been fulfilled since arrival. Bus Stop Films is looking for a team of emerging producers to come on board for their 2023 class film projects as Inclusive Producers Attachments, opening up inclusive filmmaking opportunities to 10 next generation producers in 7 states. They will be employed to work with their in-house Producer Dianna La Grassa, to bring to life Bus Stop’s slate of 18 inclusively made #ShortFilms, being produced through their Accessible Film Studies Program. Shout out to our Comms & Creative Industries stude Shout out to our Comms & Creative Industries students who took part in the o e-day Venture Makers Innovation Challenge at the new Bankstown City campus last week. The challenge: how do we promote mental health in Western Sydney? Teams worked with mentors and entrepreneurs to brainstorm, create and pitch their solution to a packed auditorium. Congrats to our first prize winners: Josh Thomas, Angelina Le and Florence Tarawallie!!
