Through this video journalism project, Jessica Cortis reports on the Music for Refugees program which ships musical instruments to detainees in immigration detention centres including Nauru.
Founder Philip Feinstein started the program 10 years ago at Villawood Immigration Detention Centre and now delivers instruments to detention centres nationwide. Feinstein continues to teach music jam sessions at Villawood weekly. The program has helped refugees and asylum seekers who according to reports are vulnerable to severe depression and even suicide, while in detention.
